Year 1

Class teacher Miss McCarthy

Year 1 is a very exciting year where the children transition from Early Years and move onto the National Curriculum. Early reading, writing and phonics are a key priority in Year 1. Handwriting and letter formation is the key to success and the children will continue to focus on this in Year 1. We build on from Reception Class and continue with our phonics scheme 'All Aboard Phonics'. All children will receive phonics books weekly which directly link to their reading level. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure and have free choice reading from our Library Books over the weekend. At the end of Year 1 the children undertake a National Phonic Screening Check is in the summer term.

In Year 1 the children will continue to consolidate their understanding of number within 20 as well as learning about the place value of all numbers on the 100 square. They will use concrete apparatus to support their maths and develop further their problem-solving skills. The children will focus on addition and subtraction, number bonds, partitioning and sequencing.

Children are encouraged to be creative, independent and resilient, as they experience an exciting, broad and balanced curriculum. The children will learn a wide range of topics in the wider curriculum including seasons, beaches, materials, healthy eating, plants, portraits and many more. The children will thoroughly enjoy their time in Year 1 and we can't wait for their learning journey to start!
